Dr Cynthia Geary

Dr Geary holds a Doctorate in Philosophy of Education with a specialisation in students with special needs. She spent her junior year of university at the University of Kent, Canterbury, England. She served in the United States Peace Corps for two and a half years, in Honduras, Central America. She has also taught in China. The international experiences fueled her interest in culture and diversity in American education. Dr Geary has taught in Southern California Teacher Education programmes for 24 years Her research areas include English language acquisition, culturally and linguistically diverse population, and gifted youth. She delights in the instructing and researching the intersectionality of these interests.

Multilingual learners who are gifted

There are students in our classes that we always remember – for the ways they stretched our understanding of how students learn and the strategies we implemented. Students who are multilingual and gifted require a concentrated look at their learning needs and characteristics. Since language is the primary mode of expression for students acquiring primary or secondary languages, it is paramount that teachers are knowledgeable of characteristics that indicate giftedness and simultaneously incorporate methods that support them in reaching their potential.
