Nigel J. Ross teaches at the Sacred Heart University (Università Cattolica) in Milan, Italy. As well as his teaching work, he also does some professional translation. With a particular interest in writing skills, translation and stylistic aspects of language, he has written numerous articles, including several for MET, such as ‘Hedging in Language’, April 2018 (with Catherine Bell), ‘Making the Headlines’, July 2003, and the keynote article ‘The Brainwork of Language’, March 2001.

Pivotal paragraphs

Teaching writing skills at any level, but particularly at an advanced level, necessarily implies focusing on the paragraph. Well-written paragraphs are, indeed, fundamental in good writing. In any piece of writing of a certain length, there will be a series of paragraphs, each new paragraph starting with a physical space that the writer creates by indenting or by skipping a line. By separating our writing into paragraphs, we are helping the reader understand that one thing is ending and something new is beginning; we are helping the reader understand the organisation and meaning of our piece of writing.
