What’s in a name?

Introduction
As we go through our everyday lives, we are addressed in various ways by the different people we interact with. For instance, on any given day, the authors may be referred to as Jim, Uncle Jimmy, Mr. Ronald, Jim-sensei, Andy, Andrew, Mr. or Dr. Boon, or Prof Andy (during Indonesian teacher training sessions!). In the classroom, how our students address us may be largely determined by the cultural or institutional norms of the settings in which we teach. As Zhang et al. (2023) observe, these norms become internalised as part of students’ personal value . . .
