Dr Gemma Williams is neurodivergent university lecturer, with a deep interest in cognitive linguistics and neurodivergent communication; her doctoral research investigated communication between autistic and non-autistic speakers.
She is also an experienced EFL teacher with a Masters Degree in English Language Teaching. She has taught beginner level students through to advanced, business English learners to asylum seekers and migrant workers, from summer school groups to one-to-ones. Most recently, she has been involved in the production of digital ELT learning resources.

Neurodivergence in the ELT classroom: think differently
Sometimes, a learner might give an unexpected, off-beat answer to a question or they approach an activity in a way that feels slightly out of step with the rest of the group. Perhaps, instead, they seem disengaged or unwilling to participate in group tasks. It is very easy, in these moments, to interpret what we are seeing through the familiar lenses of language proficiency or behaviour. However, these are not always the most helpful explanations.
