Three decades ago, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) published a report produced by the International Commission on Education for the Twenty-first Century. Entitled Learning: The Treasure Within (UNESCO, 1996), the report focused on the fundamental question: What kind of education is needed for what kind of society of tomorrow?
One chapter of the report focused on what the authors called the four pillars of learning: the types of learning that students need to thrive in a constantly evolving global world. The pillars are:
