Lessons from Leo Jones: what vintage ELT materials can still teach us (Part 2)

In the previous issue, I examined the work of Leo Jones, focusing on his classic texts Functions of English (1977) and Notions in English (1979), and I argued that these vintage ELT materials have more to offer today’s teachers than their faded covers might suggest. We traced the intellectual context of the communicative turn in which Jones was writing, and considered what sets his approach apart from the coursebooks that came to dominate the field in subsequent decades.
