When AI improves language but distorts meaning

AI is making business communication better, faster, clearer and more structured. Some readers may disagree with this statement. Yet one of the ways AI may ultimately make communication less effective is precisely where meaning depends most heavily on context.

Assumptions about the communicative benefits of AI are now widespread (OpenAI, 2022; Bender et al., 2021; Blodgett et al., 2020). In a remarkably short period of time, AI has moved towards an almost foundational position in the development and deployment of teaching materials, and increasingly into the classroom itself – as a teaching aid.
